How to tune your ukulele

  1. 1
Tap Start Tuning. Allow microphone access. Nothing is recorded or uploaded — everything runs in your browser.
  2. 2
Pluck one string at a time. Start with the C string — it's the easiest to identify. The tuner will auto-detect which string you're playing.
  3. 3
Adjust until the needle centers. Tighten the tuning peg if the needle reads flat (left), loosen if it reads sharp (right). New nylon strings stretch — expect to re-tune a few times.

Frequently asked

What is standard ukulele tuning?

Standard ukulele tuning is gCEA, also called C tuning. From the string closest to your face to the one closest to the floor: G4 (392 Hz), C4 (261.63 Hz), E4 (329.63 Hz), A4 (440 Hz). This works for soprano, concert, and most tenor ukuleles.

Why is the G string higher than the C string?

Standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant — the G string is tuned an octave higher than you'd expect. Instead of running low to high in pitch like a guitar, the strings go high-low-low-high. This gives the ukulele its characteristic bright, jangly sound.

Can I tune to a low G instead?

Yes — many tenor players prefer low G tuning, which drops the G string an octave down to G3 (196 Hz). It gives the ukulele a fuller low end and works well for fingerstyle. Switch the tuner to Guitar mode and use the low E reading as a rough guide, or just tune by ear once one string is set.

Baritone ukulele uses a different tuning, right?

Correct. Baritone ukuleles tune to DGBE — the same as the top four strings of a guitar — not gCEA. This tuner is set up for standard soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles. Baritone players can use the guitar tuner and target D3, G3, B3, E4.

How often should I tune my ukulele?

More often than you'd think, especially with new strings. Nylon stretches a lot for the first week or two — expect to re-tune several times per session. After break-in, a quick tune-up at the start of each playing session keeps you in good shape.

Ukulele not holding tune?

If your uke goes out of tune within minutes, the nut slots may be binding the strings or the tuning pegs may need adjustment. A quick setup fixes both. Based in Pikeville, NC, serving Goldsboro and Wayne County.
